Italy has been a source for inspiration for many people and traveling to Puglia (the heel of Italy) this year may just be one of the best regions our Slow Food group has encountered. 

Puglia is known as Italy’s breadbasket and some of the finest olive oil, pasta and bread available in Italy will be planned in the many meals we will enjoy.

Imagine traveling through the rustic countryside, sightseeing the Trulli country is like nowhere else in Italy – clusters of hobbit-like, whitewashed, dome-roofed houses. We will be visiting at wineries and farms and restaurants, enjoying Slow Food as we travel.

I look forward to traveling with you and exploring another beautiful region of Italy.

The east coast of Puglia, is rich in history and natural beauty and, of course, delicious food.  As always, the emphasis will be on historical and indigenous products, and those that are included in Slow Food’s “Ark of Taste” and “Presidia.”

Our culinary coordinator is Judy Witts Francini…the “diva” of Divina Cucina who has coordinated all of our 6 previous “Slow Food” experiences.  Also with the group will be Jasper Mirabile, founder of Slow Food Kansas City.

Monday, September 24, arrive in Bari, Puglia. The hotel is Oriente Hotel Bari for 1 night.  Click on the link and take a look at this first class property.  Our first event as a group will be a reception and dinner.

Tuesday, September 25, after a morning tour through the “old quarter”, we leave Bari and head south to our next residential destination, Masseria Lama San Giorgonear the town of Rutigliano.  A masseria is a fortified farmhouse or country house on a country estate usually found in the Italian region of Puglia and is similar to a hacienda in Spain or a plantation in the United States.  With all the conveniences of a modern hotel, San Giorgio produces the finest in fruits and vegetables…expect some delicious meals!

The following days will include a variety of visits highlighting the best of the region.

Matera is known as “la Città Sotterranea” (the Subterranean City), and is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, having been inhabited since the 10th millennium BC.  Its historical center “Sassi“, is considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1993.  Matera is located in the province of Basilicata.   Link to Matera. 

Alberobello  is famous for its unique small historical houses called trullo (plural trulli). Alberobello is a Unesco World Heritage site since 1996 thanks to the unique architectural and historical value of trulli houses. Link to Alberobello.

Ostuni is one of Puglia’s most beautiful cities, a tumble of white-washed buildings perched strategically atop a hill with views of the endless olive trees in the Valle d’Itria countryside, and the glimmering Adriatic Sea.  Link to Ostuni.

Sunday, September 30, The last night will be spent in Bari, again at Oriente Hotel Bari.  There will be a final day celebration of the journey.

Monday, October 1,  Depart from Bari to return home, or explore other parts of Italy or Europe.

Your deposit is refundable up until June 1, 2018 less an administrative fee of $75.  Cancellation after June 1, 2016 will result in loss of deposit.   Refunds for cancellations received on or after June 22, 2018 will be dependent upon monies recovered from suppliers. The price is also subject to increase due to imposition of taxes or fuel surcharges not in effect at the time of pricing, an increase in the exchange rate of more than 2.5%, or should the number of participants fall below fifteen (15).
