In 1891, the YWCA of Kansas City established what many food
historians regard as the first public cafeteria. It provided cheap,
self-service meals to working women.
You may wonder how a city where the concept of
assembly-line food service originated can support a group such as Slow Food, and
what makes Slow Food Kansas City interesting and different from other groups in
Kansas City.
Our people make us different.
Our events can be small and intimate or large and social.
In either case, the people at a Slow Food event have a common interest in
whatever topic is being covered, whether it is choosing different heirloom
tomatoes, how to prepare pasta, or the many types of garlic and what each type
can offer to a specific dish.
Slow Food Kansas City focuses on food, local growers and
the food preparation practices within different cultures. Slow Food teaches us
about choice and season — choosing food produced in season for the prime taste
in the food you eat. Slow Food not only attempts to preserve authentic
ingredients in food preparation, but is also dedicated to maintaining traditions
which are sometimes centuries old.
Part of this new interest in locally grown, seasonable fare is that the people
of Kansas City want the option to choose local, sometimes organic foods. This
desire has generated interest in and support for farmers markets, restaurant
tastings of an array of food and wine and other local offerings in our area.
Gourmets in Kansas City have become more sophisticated and the demand for
greater variety has been met in our community with a number of rising
restaurants and venues that provide this to the consumer. So hop on our website
and get to know the people of Slow Food Kansas City! We welcome you.
